Esta coletânea traz a preciosa história dos blues lançados pela gravadora Atlantic, inaugurada em 1947 pelo turco Ahmet Ertegün e o caça-talentos Herb Abramson. O principal foco da gravadora era o jazz e o R&B. A Atlantic ganhou reputação por tratar os músicos com muito respeito, não só pagando corretamente, como também pagando royalties, sistema pouco usual em se tratando de músicos negros. Essa política trouxe para seus estúdios os melhores músicos. B.B. King, Big Joe Turner, Floyd Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles, Ruth Brown, T-Bone Walker, Johnny Jones e muitos outros têm faixas memoráveis entre as 58 incluídas neste álbum.
